Her great result, riding to the music from Doctor Who, was especially impressive considering beautiful grey pony George Clooney is only seven-years-old.
Chef d’Equipe Caroline Bell said it had been a lovely moment when Sophie had photographed the leaderboard with her name at the top, before finally finishing in 14th place.
“Sophie is the embodiment of all that is good about our sport,” said Caroline. “She came out of the arena with a huge grin on her face. She’s a lovely kid with her feet firmly on the ground.
“Our team will go away with memories that will stay with them forever, as well as life lessons about good sportsmanship and working hard.”
Germany dominated the dressage competitions at this week’s championships, being held at Bishop Burton College. The final day’s freestyle competition – always a highlight because of the music – was no exception.
First place honours went to 15-year-old Moritz Treffinger, who has a clean sweep of gold medals to take back to Germany. Denmark’s Alexander Yde Helgstrand took silver, with Julia Barbian, of Germany, taking bronze. Sophie was the only rider for Great Britain to qualify to ride in the freestyle competition.
